Certainly the biggest and most beautiful part of Dubrovnik found its place on Lapad peninsula, thus the name Lapad. This part is located to the west of the City and is a place of many hotels, beaches, lovely promenades, and walking tracks. Lapad is also a very nice residenial area. The part of Lapad called "Uvala Lapad" or simply Uvala, meaning the bay of Lapad is a place of a lovely promenade beside the bay filled with hotels and beaches. The Uvala promanade continues in a lovely sea-coast walking track to the very end of the peninsula and returns following the coast on the other side of peninsula. The track passes through "Dubrava - Babin Kuk" which is another part of Lapad worth to mention.

Lapad is sometimes called the lungs of Dubrovnik because of hillock Petka which is filled with dense oak wood. Another lovely walking track leads to the top of this hill, a vista point that offers exquisite view.

Uvala Lapad Beach located in the bay of Lapad.

The beach is located in the vicinity of several Lapad Hotels as well as many restaurants, cafe bars, tennis courts, children playgrounds.  On the beach itself there is a restaurant and couple of café bars.  The beach is equipped with showers and changing cabins, sun umbrellas and deck chairs.

Due to it’s pine wood surroundings, this sandy beach can be enjoyed during hot summer days too. Generally we split Dubrovnik in several major parts and these are the ones you will most often face:

Grad - Dubrovnik's historic center, in English sometimes refered to as Old Town or Old City. The correct translation however should simply be: the City. This is the best known part of Dubrovnik and we will cover it separetly in Essential Dubrovnik.

Pile [peela] - This archaical part of Dubrovnik is maybe small in size still it could easily be the most important. It is the connecting link between the City and all other city parts. Located just to the west of the City walls it is the final city bus station when going into the historic center and the usual place for picking up a taxi. Hilton Imperial hotel is located on Pile with a wonderful view on fort Lovrijenac and the Pile entrance into the City.

Ploče [ploche] - Full name should be "Ploče iza Grada" meaning Ploce behind the City. As you can deduct from the name itself Ploce are located easterly of the City walls and are the elite residential area with magnificent view of the City Walls, open sea, and lush green Lokrum island. In this part some of the most exclusive Dubrovnik hotels found its place: Hotel Excelsior and Grand Villa Argentina.

Gruž [gruush] - The port of Dubrovnik found its proper place in Gruz. Gruz is located Northwest of the City and is an attractive passenger vessel port and a marina. Gruz is a residential area with a view of Lapad and beyond to the Elaphite islands.

Dubrovnik truly is the "jewel of the Adriatic", as so many tourist brochures proudly state. Come see what this gem has to offer the world traveler! One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Dubrovnik is a gorgeous coastal town with a rich history and stunning natural landscape. The marble streets boast lines of churches, palaces, squares, and terracotta homes.

The city has become the newest European hotspot, with droves of tourists visiting the area each year. Located on the southern tip of the Croatian coast, the city is officially a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city's old fortified town looks over limestone cliffs onto the sparkling Adriatic - this is the perfect example of what makes this place so magical. The history and the natural beauty combine in a way that can't be found anywhere else in the world. The seaside offers fantastic beaches that look out onto the ocean and Croatia's many islands!

There's so much to see here that you'll need to stay awhile, especially if you want to get in some beach time. When you visit, book a walking tour of the city and have a guide show you the most interesting spots. You'll learn a lot about the town's history, which dates back to the 7th century, and have a chance to see the famous spots.

The city is especially famous for its fortifications, which have successfully kept out intruding armies for centuries. The 25m-high City Walls stretch an impressive 2 km - as you make your way along the circuit, you'll get to see ramparts, as well as views of the old city, rooftops, domes, and churches.

Another great destination within the city is the Rector's Palace. A relic of the 15th century, when the city was at its peak as a center of trade, this destination is a prime example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture.

The building was once used for government purposes, and now is home to the Cultural Historical Museum, which has a collection of art, furniture, and other items from the time period. The atrium is often used for concerts during the summer.

he story of Dubrovnik is old as it is beautiful. It all started long ago in times that could only be recalled by legends... In this time thrived the Roman city of Epidaurum located on the place of today's Cavtat. Being on the crossroads Epidaurum was a large and prosperous Roman colony numbering by some predictions up to 40 000 people.

The Roman empire was at its decline as the barbarian invasions were rampaging throughout the empire and so the city of Epidaurum shared the faith of the empire, first damaged by an earthquaqe and then ransacked by a barbarian force. The numerous refugees fled to a small already populated island nearby called Laus - the rock, and there they found shelter to form a new city that will later be named Ragusium.

Some time later in the 7th century with the Slav migration Croatians came and made a settlement on the shore across the channel of Laus and they called the settlement Dubrovnik, most probably by the dense oak woods that surrounded them on the slopes of the hill Srdj. And the two settlements coexisted and traded until they were one.

Already in the 9th century the joined City was so strong and fortified that it succeded to repell 15 month Saracen siege.

In the 11th century the channel between the two settlements was finally covered-up and the City was physically united and te channel became the most famous street of Dubrovnik, celebrated in many songs and poems, the Stradun street.

From the early days God gently smiled on the new formed City and Dubrovnik was growing and expanding its influence on the seas and trade. Of course position on the trade crossroads, sheltered harbour along with the skill in shipbuilduing inherited from the long sea-tradition of Epidaurum, and quality oak wood that surrounded the City greatly helped in building its maritme fleet and becoming a trade center.

Until the 13th century Dubrovnik was growing under the protectorate of the Byzantine empire but the local autonomy had a strong presence so already from the 12th century the City elects its own Rector and the people have a strong will in rulling and on deciding important political questions.

Strong blow to Dubrovnik, its economy and development, was occupation by Venice from 1205 which lasted for 150 years as Venice named the members of the Great council (one of the executive political bodies) and was trying to take over the complete reign in Dubrovnik.

Thus Dubrovnik survived the rule and developed slowly into an aristocratic republic becoming free in the 14th century only nominaly accepting Austro-Hungarian rule and paying annual tribute.

And the earlier name of "Communitas Ragusina" changed to "Respublica Ragusina" and Dubrovnik became a rebublic that had the strength and power to rival Venice.

The small republic continued to grow thankfully to the wise rule, neutral posture, and diplomacy that enabled more and more privileges. So the kingdoms and empires grew and weakend while the Republic was always there, maneuvereing and aiding for profit, trading with all sides and prospering.

Noteworthy is the battle of Levant, between Turks and Christian coalition when the Republic aided both sides with war ships... because there was only one goal of the Republic, one thing that they adored and were willing to preserve at all cost, this was freedom. The sentance engraved on the fortress Lovrijenac encaptures the soul of the Dubrovnik republic: "Non bene pro toto venditur Libertas auro" - "Liberty can not be sold for all the gold in the world.” And Dubrovnik was best at diplomacy and used it to keep precious liberty in any way possible.

Most famous Dubrovnik ships were called "Argosy", and this later became a poetic expression for a large, wealthy, merchant vessel. The City had such an extensive maritime trade network that their ships sailed all the way even to England. And the Republic was so wealthy that it held colonies in India.

But the Republic, the center of trade, arts and culture had a faith, similar to that of the Epidaurum. In 1667 a great tragedy befell the small City, "the Great earthquaqe of 1667". Most of the City was shattered into dust: its builduings, churches, mantions and houses went to ruin... and Dubrovnik once more was saved by its diplomacy as it sent its ambassadors to greet the invasion fleet of Venice and the Turkish land force assuring them that the Republic is doing fine and does not need any "help".

Although Dubrovnik Republic survived this tragedy and was rebuilt to shine anew it never reached its old glory and slowly faded until 1806 the Napoleon forces were outside its gates asking for free passage. The authorities let them pass but the French did not have intention of leaving and the Republic was abolished in 1808.

Later Dubrovnik came under Austro-Hungarian empire and after the WWI became a part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later renamed into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and after WWII as part of Croatia remained in Socialistic Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and today after Croatia took its independence is a shining example of Croatian culture and heritage bringing thousands of tourists every year to rediscover the Dubrovnik dream once again, a simple dream of freedom and beauty.
