Kranjska Gora, with the pristine nature, can offer much in the winter, but also very much in summer. Attractive alpine climate, in which you certainly can rest, or you can enjoy a more active vacation. There are many bike paths and trails (bike park), walking, summer toboggan run, tennis, golf, organized tours (rafting on the Soca, visit Kekec Land) mountaineering, gambling or visit neighboring Austria, Italy and much more.
Why come to Kranjska Gora? First of all : mountains! And if you've only got time for a little peak, then Ciprnik, jutting out modestly above the Planica valley, with a bald crown affording views over to the mighty Triglav and his lofty companions, is the one to do. A chairlift will take you up to reach a ridge, from where it's easy climbing through forest before one final rocky ascent to the peak- and what a peak! In the light of a late August afternoon, the mountains were pink and we could see over into Italy and Austria over the Karavanke Range. Careful on the way down though- take the first path down or you'll end up searching for waymarkers on a steep scree slope.
Kranjska Gora, once a tiny village, has grown over the years into a modern sports centre. In the winter hosting the world alpine skiing tournament for the Vitranc Cup, and in the summer inviting enthusiastic walkers and mountaineers from all over the world. Ideal for a walking holiday or families that like to spend their holiday's outdoors.
Kranjska gora is located in the far north-west part of Slovenia to the borders with Austria and Italy. In the north it reaches the Karavanke ridge and in the south peaks of the Julian Alps an the valley of Krma, Kot, Vrata and Tamar in the area of the Triglav National Park. The Sava Dolinka rises in the natural reserve Zelenci bellow the village of Podkoren.
The symbol of Kranjska Gora is an animal grouse - Ruševec ,which represents intact nature, riches and love . Ruševec is protected species in these places.
Today tourism is the main economic branch, its beginnings go bact to year 1904 .First summer-climate tourism was developed and then hiking and mountaineering.
The Russian Chapel is the memorial to russian war prisoners who were killed by the snow avalanche . The poor souls were kept in prison bu austrian army and were working hard to keep the road passable .One day, 300 of them got killed in previously mentiond way. The Chapel was built after the World War I by the russian soldgers. The graves can be seen all around the Chapel.
Hiking is one of the most popular forms of enjoying an active holiday. I can recommend a trip to the Triglav valleys of Vrata, Kot and Krma. Stretching from Mojstrana to the foothills and then on to the summit of Triglav (2864metres), Slovenia’s highest mountain. Situated in the Zgornjesavska valley and in the four small adjoining valleys of Planica, Pisnica, Krnica and Martuljski potok, there are 40 kilometres of well-kept footpaths, some of which trail through the Triglav National Park. Several signposts will tell you when you enter the Triglav National Park. All footpaths are marked on the map and allow you to tailor routes to reflect your own specific needs. .A footpath leads you from Kranjska Gora along the beautiful sun-kissed slopes of Karavanke or in the opposite direction through the Stan valley towards Podkoren with magnificent views of the Julian Alps. The Krnica valley is accessible via the winding road leaving Kranska Gora and ascending towards Vrsic. Turn off this road at the second bridge over the Pisnica river and let yourself be led along the glacial moraines and grassy slopes to the mighty foothills of the Prisank, Razor and Skrlatica mountains. From Kranjska Gora, another picturesque footpath will lead you to Tamar; the route begins at the start of the Vitranc chairlift and takes us along the meadows (winter cross-country track) and up what used to be the railway embankment through the forest into the Planica valley and pod Poncami to the alpine hut in Tamar. A section of the land covered by the map belongs to the Triglav National Park, a secured nature spot which is to be preserved in its original beauty.
Ski lifts and runs are located on the slopes of Vitranc all the way from Kranjska Gora right down to Planica from an altitude of 1215 to 800 metres above the sea level. Ski runs are linked with a system of 5 chairlifts and 14 ski tows including the new four-chaired Dolencev rut lift. Ski lifts are located in Gozd-Martuljek, Kranjska Gora, Podkoren and Planica. Starting from this winter, the ski lifts in Mojstrana and Ratece will also be operating.
Bike trail goes from Ratece to Gozd Martuljek. From Martuljek to Kranjska it goes on the old railway tracks and is separated from the motorway. It goes by resting places and refreshment points, interesting poiunts of interest - cultural and natural . On the west it goes to Ratece and to Mangart Lakes.Total distance from Gozd Martuljek to Ratece is about 20 km.
Planica is the cradle of ski jumps and ski flights. Planica's fame goes back to 1936, when ski jumper Sep Bradl first passed the limit of 100 m. 50 years later the limit of 200 m was also surpassed here in Slovenia.
Take a look at that beautiful Gorenjska house. All in wood with wooden shutters on the windows, post box made from trunk... On the wall are snowshoes which were used in old times. Boxes for flowers are also made of wood. You'll fell in love with house.
